24.09.2024 13:48
St Helen's Church is located in the Karsiyaka District of Izmir, and is one of the most prominent faith tourism locations. It is the first Catholic Church built in Kordelia, the name of the district at the time of the Ottoman Empire.
It was completed between 1904-1905 on a plot allocated by the Aliotti family, one of the prominent wealthy families of the period.
The architect of the church was Raymond Charles Perre, who was also involved in the construction of the mansion Clock Tower, one of the city's landmarks.
The historic building, which is active today and can also be visited, is named after Flavia Julia Helena, the wife of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine, who lived between middle of the 2. and 3.century.
St Helen's Church, among the interesting historical structures of Karşıyaka, where different cultures always coexist, is an interesting sightseeing spot for everyone from 7 to 70.
Gothic panels, sculptures and various depictions of the Christian faith can also be examined in the interior of the building, which promises a stunning church-going experience with its multi-faceted visuals.
The central part is high and the sides are low. Other notable are the nave, tinted windows, and the entrance part, which has triangular shaped pediments that add depth to the design.
