Ancient City of Gordion

Today only a small part of the ancient city of Gordion, located within the borders of Ankara, is unearthed. This portion is said to correspond to approximately 10 percent. This special city is the capital of the Phrygians for a long time. Studies on the ancient city of Gordion continue in full swing today. Gordion, the symbol for Phrygia, is above the exact confluence of Sakarya River and Porsuk stream. Today, there is a distance of around 90 kilometers between this city and Ankara. It is also 29 kilometers from the ancient city of Polatlı. The ancient city of Gordion, located exactly in Yassihöyük, is on the UNESCO provisional World Heritage list. Studies about the ancient city enable the rediscovery and interpretation of Anatolia. This is actually discovered by chance during a construction in the region in the 1800s. This construction is said to belong to railway construction. The first excavations at the ancient city of Gordion took place in the early 1900s. The first excavation takes place by Gustav Körte. The second excavation that followed takes place under the control of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, owned by the University of Pennsylvania. These excavations continue for a total of 23 years. The excavations, which took place in 1950 and 1973, were led by Rodney Young. The first settlements in this exciting ancient city are said to belong to the early Iron Age. This period covers 1100-900 BC. Many pebbles and mosaic stones are found during the excavations in the area. In total, more than 700 ancient materials have been exhibited in the Museum of the Ancient City of Gordion during the excavations so far. Therefore, visitors to the museum may have an idea about the ancient city of Gordion. This place is especially valuable to see the Phrygian Way of life. The most valuable center of Gordion is the Tumulus of Midas Höyük.
