Karain Cave

Karain Cave, which is dated to the chipped stone age and is an important archaeological center in terms of the region, is located in Yağca Village, Döşemealtı district, west of Antalya city center. The cave, which was discovered by Professor Doctor Ismail Kılıç Kökten as ‘doyen’ in 1946, is located in the western part of the Taurus Mountains, on the Çadır hill slopes of Katran Mountain. Karain Cave, which is 150 meters high from the plain in front of it, attracts attention with its multi-layered settlement traces which are 430 meters above sea level. In addition, chipped Stone Age caves usually bear traces from a single period, while Karain Cave houses archaeological remains in three layers: the lower, middle and upper Paleotic period (Stone Age period). These data have also contributed to historians ' understanding of the relations between Europe and the Near East and their migration routes. Apart from all this information, it should be noted that the cave of Karain is located in an area rich in active water resources as well as being a place where the oldest human remains, tools and various artistic examples of Anatolia have been discovered. Archaeological finds such as human remains, edge scrapers, drillers, tips and the shape of a human head made of animal bone, which is prominent as the first art work in Anatolia, are exhibited in the Karain Museum and Antalya Museum.
