Salt Khan

When you come to the city of Bursa, you will see that there are many historical khans that welcome you here. One of them, the Salt Khan, has been home to travelers from nice throughout its history. Salt Khan, which has been used as an important accommodation and Recreation Area for many years, is built by Omur Bey. Omur Bey is known as the son of Timurtaş. Construction of the khan corresponds to the year 1454. The Salt Market in the same region is created with the idea of providing income to the mosque. In fact, it functions in this way for many years. As with other Ottoman Khans, a courtyard is located in the middle section. Around this courtyard, the rooms with porches in front draw attention. The last restoration at the salt market took place in 2007. It continues to serve actively again immediately after this restoration. The restoration process is continued entirely by Osmangazi Municipality. At that time, khan was included in the ‘Cultural Road Revitalization Project’.

Today, cut stones and bricks are used in the walls of the historic site, which is side by side with the Salt Bazaar Mosque.Salt Khan, which has a rectangular plan, has 35 rooms at the top. 18 of these rooms are located on the lower side and 17 are located on the second and last floor. A stone foundation with some basic information about the khan is immediately visible in the front facade section. Information about when and by whom the khan was built can be obtained from here.

The street where the khan is located passes as Tuzpazarı(Saltbazaar) Street. When the khan was most active, especially the shops where salt and various spices were sold were in the foreground. That's why it's called The Salt Khan. The Salt Khan occupies an area of approximately 100 square meters in total. When you visit the khan today, you will find a variety of shops serving mainly in areas such as textiles or crafts.
