Canakkale Stone Bridge

05.11.2024 08:05

The historic Stone Bridge, located in Bayramiç, Çanakkale, was built in 1795 over the Tabaklar Stream. As one of the city's historical landmarks, the Stone Bridge is constructed of cut stones, measuring 27 meters in length and 3.85 meters in width. Near the bridge lies the historic Karşıyaka Mosque, and due to its proximity, the bridge is also known as the “Karşıyaka Bridge.”

History and Architectural Features of the Stone Bridge

Built during the Ottoman period in 1795, the Stone Bridge reflects the aesthetic principles of its time, being constructed with finely cut stone. Its three-arched structure is particularly notable, and the bridge has two plaques on protrusions resembling balconies. These plaques, inscribed in Ottoman Turkish, provide fundamental information about the bridge's construction. Over time, the bridge has become a prominent symbol of Bayramiç.

The Stone Bridge and Karşıyaka Mosque

The Stone Bridge was built adjacent to the courtyard wall of the Karşıyaka Mosque. This proximity led to its alternate name, the “Karşıyaka Bridge.” Together with the mosque, which complements the historic and cultural fabric of the region, the bridge creates a harmonious architectural unity. The historic bridge and mosque frequently appear in Bayramiç’s promotional materials and attract the attention of visitors.

The Plaques and Aesthetic Structure of the Stone Bridge

The bridge’s aesthetic structure is characterized by elegant arches made of cut stones and prominent decorative protrusions. The two plaques on the bridge offer important information regarding its history and construction. However, recent additions of unplastered brick railings have disrupted the bridge’s historic aesthetic, a change that has been criticized by history enthusiasts. These alterations have raised questions about respect for the bridge’s original structure and sparked discussions on its preservation.

Renovation Efforts for the Stone Bridge

To preserve the Stone Bridge in line with its historical value, a comprehensive environmental renovation is planned. The goal of the restoration work is to improve the bridge’s design and aesthetics while maintaining its original character. Bayramiç Municipality, along with relevant organizations, aims to create a more attractive area for both locals and tourists by making modifications that do not compromise the bridge’s authentic architecture.

As a symbol of Bayramiç, the Stone Bridge is one of Çanakkale’s most significant structures due to its historical and cultural value. With its architectural features and surrounding natural beauty, the bridge captivates visitors and, through the upcoming restoration efforts, is poised to receive the recognition it deserves.
