Altar of Zeus

The area known as the altar of Zeus is one of the first places that comes to mind when it is called Çanakkale. According to Homeros, the gods lived on Mount Ida, and they watched and ruled the Trojan War directly from this area. The gods also mention that Zeus was also present here in The Iliad Saga. The area being on top of this hill facing Edremit Bay is presumed to belong to Zeus. The altar of Zeus, located above the point called Dede Tepe, refers to a large area. This area is formed as a result of rock mass processing. You can use the stairs made of hollow steps to get to the rock mass without any problems. The altar niches and seating areas attract attention except for the cistern in the Zeus altar. Cisterns are especially carved inside. The Cave of Zeus lies below the altar. On the side of this ancient altar, there is Erdem Dede entombed saint. Erdem Dede is a hero who became a symbol in the Gallipoli campaign. In this sense, the altar of Zeus stands out as both a historical and sacred site. Zeus altar is approximately 2 km away from the village called Adatepe. You can reach this area on foot or by the direction of the villagers. It is quite pleasant to walk the road from the village to the area. The villagers of Adatepe approach foreigners in a very friendly and helpful way. You can take plenty of pictures on the way to the Zeus altar, because it has a great view of nature. As motor vehicles are prohibited from entering this area, all visitors must walk. Zeus altar is located in Ayvacık district. There are many olive pine trees around the altar of Zeus. Many legends are told about the region. Legend is that Zeus first saw Hera in this area. This particular area, which also sees Midilli Island, leans its back to Gargaran Hill.
