Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Fountain

Edirne has a large number of historical fountains from the Ottoman period. One of them, the Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Fountain, is located on a sloping street. The Fountain is also known as the largest fountain in Edirne. The inscription on it provides important data about dates the fountain was built. According to the inscription, The Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Fountain was built in 1667 by Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha, who gave the fountain its name. Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha is the famous Grand Vizier of IV.Mehmet. He built the fountain seven years before he was grand vizier. The historical fountain manages to reach the present day without any problems. It is one of the rare examples of this feature in the city. Kara Mustafa Pasha, as it is known, after Fazıl Ahmet Pasha died, served as grand vizier in his place. He is executed after the unsuccessful result in the siege of Vienna. It is known that he built around 10 fountains in the city, which leaves no trace behind. The only surviving fountain among these is the Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Fountain. The Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Fountain is located between the Old Mosque and Selimiye Bazaar. The fountain, which has three separate facades, consists of cut stone material. The timber roof part has a corrugated tile structure. The main facade area is quadrangular in plan. The merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Fountain has a height of about six meters above the ground. On the other hand, the width is around eight and a half meters. The Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Fountain, which has an imposing appearance in general, attracts attention with its star flower motifs. There is a half-metre trough between the fountain niches. It has trough marble material on both sides. On the east side of the fountain, there are two mirror stones.
