Adnan Menderes Mausoleum

Turkish politician Adnan Menderes, who was the Prime Minister of Republic of Turkey between 1950 and 1960 and owner of The War of Independence Medal, was executed on Imrali Island on 17th September 1961 after the coup on 27 th of May. The international airport in Izmir (Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport), Adnan Menderes Boulevard in Istanbul, a university established in Aydın (Adnan Menderes University) and a boulevard near the Seyhan Dam that he built in Adana were all named after Adnan Menders and a mausoleum was built in 1990 in his memory.

The Adnan Menderes Mausoleum on Vatan Street, perhaps the most famous of the streets built and named during the Democratic Party period, houses the mortal remains of Adnan Menderes being in the first place as well as Polatkan and Zorlu. Adnan Menderes Mausoleum is visited by hundreds of people every year as it is close to the mausoleum of Turgut Özal, one of the most popular names in the political scene of the right, and brings a continuity with it.

The mortal remains of former ministers, Turkish politician and diplomat Fatin Rüştü Zorlu (1933-1960) and Minister of Labor and Finance Hasan Polatkan (1949-1961) are also kept in the Adnan Menderes Mausoleum located on Vatan Street in the Fatih district of Istanbul. In addition, the tomb of President Turgut Özal, who passed away in 1993, is located within walking distance of these three martyrs of democracy.

As a result of the law enacted under the leadership of President Turgut Özal, Adnan Menderes Mausoleum was built on Vatan Street in memory of the three martyrs of democracy after restoring the honor of Fatin Rüştü Zorlu, Hasan Polatkan and Adnan Menderes on April 11, 1990. The mortal remains of the martyrs of democracy were transferred to this mausoleum built in Topkapı with the participation of hundreds of thousands of people and Turgut Özal.
