Rumeli Lighthouse

12.08.2024 05:57

Rumeli Lighthouse includes a historical building built on the European Side of Istanbul, at the point where the Bosphorus shores meet the Black Sea, and the surrounding fishing village. Rumeli Lighthouse in Sarıyer district was built in 1855, before the Crimean War between the Ottoman Empire and its allies and Russia, on the basis of surveillance of warships at a dominant point. The operating right of the lighthouse built by France was also given to this country, but the aforesaid sanction was canceled in 1933.

Rumeli Lighthouse, on a hill of about 60 meters, attracts attention with its height of 30 meters. Rumeli Lighthouse, which used to work with gas like other lighthouses in the Ottoman Empire, currently continues to work with electricity. As it was centuries ago, today it helps ships to guide in the sea while transporting between the Marmara Sea and the Black Sea.

There is also a fishing village under the Rumeli Lighthouse, which is made out of stone. The shabby fish restaurant here stands out as an exclusive business identified with the region.

In addition, its bay that attracts weekend vacationers during summer is famous. In general, in addition to its historical lighthouse, it is a quiet destination that has the atmosphere of a holiday village with facilities and services such as restaurants, a beach, an open air cinema and sports facilities. Additionally the Sarı Saltuk Shrine spiritually welcomes its visitors all year round with its location close to the Rumeli lighthouse.
