Tekfur Palace is one of the rare Byzantine structures in the Fatih district of Istanbul, which attracts attention with its thousand-year history and architectural texture. Also known as the "Imperial House", the palace was built in the 1100s and used by Byzantine Emperors. After the conquest of Istanbul, the palace took on different functions and was renovated at various periods. Today, it is open to visitors as a museum.

History of Tekfur Palace

Tekfur Palace is one of the magnificent structures of the Byzantine period and was used together with the Blachernae Palace complex from the 12th century onwards. The palace was severely damaged during the Latin invasion, but was partially repaired when Byzantium regained control in 1261. During the Ottoman period, the palace was used for different purposes; it served as a zoo for a while and later as a glass and tile workshop.

Architectural Features

The palace offers one of the most beautiful examples of Byzantine architecture. The most striking part of the structure is the northern facade, located between the city walls and overlooking the courtyard. Supported by granite columns, this section has a rich decorative style with different stone and brick work. The windows on the middle and upper floors were carefully renewed during the restoration.

How to Get There?

Tekfur Palace is located in the Ayvansaray Neighborhood of Fatih district and is located between Edirnekapı and Eğrikapı. It is accessible by public transportation; the nearest tram stop is Edirnekapı. In addition, parking lots in the area are available for visitors arriving by private vehicle.

Other Historical Places to Visit

There are other historical structures of Istanbul close to Tekfur Palace. Kariye Museum (Chora Church) is famous for its mosaics and frescoes and exhibits important examples of Byzantine art. Edirnekapı Walls reveal the defense history of Istanbul, while Fatih Mosque and Zeyrek Mosque are other important Ottoman structures in the region.
