Yeşilköy Lighthouse

One of the historic lighthouses in Istanbul is located in the Yeşilköy district of Bakırköy on the European side. Yeşilköy Lighthouse, built in 1856 at a point projecting towards the Sea, stands out with its height of 23 meters. Built of stone, the structure was called ‘Ayastefanos Lighthouse’ in the time of the Ottoman Empire, and after 1926 it began to be called Yeşilköy Lighthouse.

The historic lighthouse still offers active function in maritime transport. It is a kind of guide for ships that will enter the Bosphorus by cruising from the sea of Marmara. The lighthouse can be seen from a distance of 10 nautical miles. It operates with electric system.

The lighthouse, which was located on the Seacoast in its early days, remained somewhat inland with the embankment of the coastline. A walking path passes in front of it. There is also a restaurant nearby. It has a characteristic, pleasant architecture. It is famous for the ambiance it creates in its immediate vicinity along with its light in the evening hours.

Yeşilköy Lighthouse, one of the prominent icons of the district, which has seen restoration in various periods, is under protection today. The depth of the sea in the area where the lighthouse is located is about 7 meters.
