Alsancak Catholic Church

Alsancak Catholic Church is located just across the street from the ferry bridge. The original name of the Alsancak Catholic Church, an Italian church, is the Church of San Rosario. The church is open to all visitors. There are no restrictions against certain faith groups in this regard. In the church, as is predicted, the rites take place on Sunday. Biscuits are served to those who come on Ritual Days. The Alsancak Catholic Church or the Church of San Rosario, with its more commonly used name, is a building in Izmir where the Levantines of Latin origin or Italian origin, whose numbers have decreased considerably, went predominantly. It is known that the structure was built in 1903 and as of today it is under police protection. Located in the center of the city, at 1481 Street, this special venue has a significant transportation advantage. As it is known, Levantines lived extensively in Alsancak during the period when the church was built. In those years it was quite active and popular due to the overcrowded population. The church today hosts many rites, baptisms and weddings. The plot of the church was purchased in 1857 from an Italian named Michelle Braggiotti. The church built in the first place remains very inadequate and small. With the contributions of the congregation, the church is enlarged by the architect Luigi Rosetti. The new church, which was inaugurated in 1903, is named The Madonna del San Rosario Church. At that time, the Church cost exactly 65 thousand francs. One year after the opening, the population of the congregation was around a thousand; however, by 1922, the figure was up to three thousand people. The participation of new people from the churches damaged in the Izmir fire at that time makes the number increase. The architectural features of the church are more close to the neoclassical style. Madonna del Rosario's painting stands out as the most striking structure in the church.
